Pulp mill support

The Minister for Fisheries, Forestry and Conservation, Senator Eric Abetz, today announced that Gunns Limited will be paid the remaining $2.6 million to assist in the development of an environmental best-practice pulp mill in Tasmania.

“This payment delivers the remainder of a 2004 Howard Government election commitment to provide up to $5 million dollars to assist Gunns in developing an environmental best-practice pulp mill in Tasmania”, the Minister said.

“The Howard Government makes no apologies for supporting the development of downstream processing and job-creation in Tasmania.

“This contrasts with the Greens, who oppose the creation of any pulp mill in Tasmania and who would prefer to see Tasmanian jobs exported to Asia.”

Payment of the money was approved in line with the Howard Government’s election commitment to assist with the costs of a pulp mill feasibility study, as well as preliminary engineering works.

The money has not gone towards the pulp mill Integrated Impact Statement.
