MEDIA RELEASE

THE HON PETER REITH MP

MINISTER FOR EMPLOYMENT WORKPLACE RELATIONS

AND SMALL BUSINESS

LEADER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

PARLIAMENT HOUSE

CANBERRA ACT 2600

15 October 1999

124/99

KERNOT SHOULD KEEP VOW OF SILENCE

Cheryl Kernot is b eing deliberately misleading or is ignorant of the facts with her claim in today’s media that the level of long term unemployment has increased under the Howard Government. The facts are that since coming to office in March 1996 the level of LTU has declined in both seasonally adjusted and trend terms.

In March 1996 there were 217,800 LTU compared with 202,200 in September 1999.

Ms Kernot is neglectful of the fact that it was under the Party that she defected to just two years ago today that the record high for LTU was 359,200 in May 1993.

The policies adopted by the Howard Government are clearly having an impact on reducing the level of unemployment in Australia after the disastrous management of the economy by the Hawke and Keating Governments which she so lauds.

Over the past week of sittings Ms Kernot has not asked one question on the issue of

employment despite it being the third most important issue to Australian electors. She should adopt the same vow of silence that she has used in the House this week when it comes to issuing media releases that are factually incorrect.

Australia’s unemployed deserve better than a shadow spokesperson who has nothing constructive to say and when she does say something it is factually wrong.

On last week’s Sunday program Ms Kernot said she was going to keep her mouth shut. It is a good policy to adopt, and the only one the Labor Party has on the issue of employment in Australia.
