MEDIA RELEASE

SENATOR RON BOSWELL

NATIONAL PARTY LEADER IN THE SENATE

SENATOR FOR QUEENSLAND

FOREIGN POWER RULING SUPPORTS NO REPUBLIC

Leading ‘No Case’ Committee member, Senator Ron Boswell, said today that the One Nation High Court ruling had ‘behea ded’ the republicans’ only argument for changing the constitution.

‘Republicans have been telling us that Australia is not independent of Great Britain and that’s why we need a new head of state regime.’

‘But the fact is, as found by the High Court, that Australia is not joined at the neck to Britain. Republicans should be relieved. Constitutional monarchists should feel vindicated.’

‘The ruling means that the symbol of an Australian Queen sits quite happily alongside the UK being a foreign power. This is what constitutional monarchists have been saying all along.’

The High Court found that the fact “that the same monarch exercises regal functions under the constitutional arrangements in the United Kingdom and Australia does not deny the proposition that the United Kingdom is a foreign power within the meaning” of the constitution.

‘The figurehead or symbol of a monarch occupies a unique place in our constitutional framework to ensure that sovereignty ultimately lies in the hands of the people and not a president or Prime Minister.’

‘Constitutional monarchists are fighting to keep this system of checks and balances and conventions which have served Australia well. This Court decision just goes to prove what a great independent system we have.’

‘Republicans can’t have it both ways. Either we’re independent or not. Either we need a political head of state or we keep our non-political and independent one.'
