Hockey Must Come Clean And Name The Ministerial Duds Media Statement - 31st October 2007

Minister for Workplace Relations, Joe Hockey must come clean and reveal who he was referring to this morning when, in an extraordinary statement, he admitted that some of his ministerial colleagues are “duds”.

This morning on Perth’s Nova FM breakfast program, when asked how he justifies personal compromises in politics, Mr Hockey said:

“It’s like playing in a football team or anything like that. You might not necessarily agree with the tactics. You know you might think another player’s a dud. But you’re playing as part of a team and you really want to win. And it’s no different in politics.”

Since the interview this morning, speculation has increased that Mr Hockey was referring to one or all of the following:

z Helen Coonan, Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the

Arts; z Jim Lloyd, Minister for Local Government, Territories and Roads;

z Malcolm Turnbull, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources;

z Peter Dutton, Minister for Revenue and Assistant Treasurer;

z Christopher Pyne, Minister for Ageing; and / or

z Fran Bailey, Minister for Small Business and Tourism

Mr Hockey has cast a slur on the entire Howard Ministry, and he must now rule out which Ministers he does not consider to be “duds”.

If Mr Hockey refuses to name names, the community could reasonably assume that Mr Hockey thinks all his Ministerial colleagues are incompetent “duds”.
