Graduate Starting Salaries Highest in a Decade December 11, 2001  MIN 07/01

Graduate starting salaries in Australia are at their highest level in 10 years.

The annual Graduate Destination Survey conducted by the Graduate Careers Council of Australia (GCCA) shows that the median starting salary for bachelor degree graduates was $35,000 or almost 86 per cent of average weekly earnings in 2001. Clearly, investment in a Higher Education degree continues to pay dividends for students who contribute, on average, about 24 percent of the cost of their course.

Graduate employment also remains at high levels with 83 per cent of bachelor degree graduates who were available for full-time employment in 2001, in full-time employment within four months of completing their degrees.

By field of study, the highest levels of full-time employment were medicine (100 per cent), pharmacy (99.6 per cent), initial nursing (96.1 per cent) and law (95.9 per cent).

It is evident universities are responding to student needs with graduate satisfaction at a record high. Ninety per cent of bachelor degree graduates have expressed broad satisfaction with their courses.

Also released today were the Postgrad 2000 and Course Experience Questionnaire 2000 reports which provide more detailed information on postgraduate destinations and course experience from last year’s graduate destination survey.
