'AMAZING GENEROSITY' - PARKAS PACKED FOR PAKISTAN 6 December 2005

The woman behind a local campaign to collect warm clothes and blankets for the victims of the Pakistan earthquake has praised the region's generosity.

Mittagong nurse, Judy Ritson said she could not thank the people of the Shoalhaven and the Southern Highlands enough.

"We are really thrilled will the response," Mrs Ritson said.

"The response has been amazing and the generosity was such that we could have kept going and going.

"Unfortunately, we had to bring it to a close at some time."

The Parkas for Pakistan Appeal saw 300 boxes of warm clothes, blankets and sleeping bags accumulated. More than 7,000 individual items were collected.

Member for Gilmore, Joanna Gash, whose Nowra office was used as one collection point, said the clothes and other items will help people in great need.

"The people of the earthquake devastated area in Pakistan will face a bleak Christmas and a major battle to rebuild," Mrs Gash said.

"But the people of the Shoalhaven and the Southern Highlands can be proud of their effort and their willingness to support people, no matter where they are, in their time of need."

The clothes are expected to be in the hands of the Pakistan Government's Relief Organisation within weeks and distributed to needed families by Christmas.
