COX PENINSULA COMMUNITY GOVERNMENT COUNCIL WINS NATIONAL LOCAL GOVERNMENT AWARD

Federal Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government, Wilson Tuckey, and Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion, today congratulated the Cox Peninsula Community Government Council for its win of the Special Award to celebrate the Year of the Outback.

Mr Tuckey announced the win this afternoon at the National Awards for Local Government presentations, held at the Australian Local Government Association conference in Alice Springs.

Cox Peninsula's entry was for their Electronic Water Card Delivery System. The system is a prime example of how a public-private partnership can produce an innovative solution regardless of the issue or the size or location of a community.

"I am encouraged to see such great developments coming out of Local Government bodies across the country," Mr Tuckey said.

"The Cox Peninsula Community Government Council has demonstrated that it is indeed looking at the needs of its community. The tenacity of a small rural council in looking for an innovative solution to water distribution in a harsh environment is worthy of special mention.

"The people who have worked on all of the projects submitted for judging this year and the successes they have achieved are something we can all be proud of," Mr  Tuckey said.

The National Awards for Local Government provide a way for Local Government bodies to share their experiences and approaches to issues faced by their colleagues across the country.

"It is vitally important to recognise Local Governments for their excellent work and to encourage others to strive for that excellence in their own communities," Senator Scullion said.

"These Awards celebrate Local Government staff as innovators and leaders of their communities. I am proud of the resourcefulness and ingenuity demonstrated by the Council in bringing this project to fruition."

The National Awards for Local Government are an annual event. Submissions are received from a wide range of Local Government bodies across Australia and address a great many issues faced by

Local Government.

Details of all entries are available in Leading Practice 2002 and the Winners supplement booklet . Copies of the publications are available from the National Office of Local Government on 02 6274 6572 or email: bob.yabsley@dotars.gov.au or www.nolg.gov.au
