JOINT HOUSE DEPARTMENT

RAISING OF THE PARLIAMENT HOUSE FLAG

Thursday 14 January 1999 at 9 am on the roof of Parliament House

A flag raising demonstration will take place on the roof of Parliament House on Thursday 14th January 1999 at 9 .00am. The event which is expected to draw a large gathering, is being held as part of the National Capital Authority’s Discover Your National Capital promotion.

The flagmast is one of the major design elements of Parliament House and is 81 metres high and weighs 220 tonnes.  Towering over Parliament House it has become a national symbol and can be seen from most parts of Canberra. It identifies the centre of the site and the centre of the building.

The flag flies twenty—four hours a day, seven days a week and is floodlit at night. The Building Management staff of Joint House Department carry out the flag raising and lowering operations. Generally four people are required to change the flag which usually takes around thirty minutes. This procedure is carried out by using two yacht-type winches installed on top of the curved wall at the foot of the north east leg of the flagmast.

The flag weighs 15 kilograms and measures 12.8 x 6.4 metres, and is approximately the size of the side of a double decker bus. It is spun and woven from dyed polyester bunting and is manufactured by Bradmill Australia. On average the flag is changed every four to six weeks, however, the shortest life of a flag was two days with the longest being four months. A total of twenty—two flags are kept and rotated on a regular basis, to ensure that they wear evenly and to allow each one to be inspected and maintained.
