MEDIA RELEASE

New Chair of ARC Announced

12 November 2002, MIN 232/02

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Tim Besley AC FTSE as the new Chair of the Board of the Australian Research Council (ARC). Mr Besley is currently President of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.

Mr Besley has distinguished himself through outstanding careers in both the public and private sectors, having served as Chairman of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Leighton Holdings and as Secretary of the Commonwealth Department of Business and Consumer Affairs. Mr Besley also served as Chancellor of Macquarie University from 1994 until 2001.

Mr Besley has been a committed advocate for the advancement of science, innovation and education and has performed, with distinction, a range of government and corporate responsibilities. He is highly regarded in the research and scientific communities and will ensure that the ARC continues to provide high quality advice to the Government.

The ARC is at an important stage in its development as it moves through its second year of operation and seeks to build on the strong performance established during its first year.

I wish him well in his new role and look forward to working with him in the future.
