FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HELPING BOYS REACH THEIR POTENTIAL Bonnet Bay Public School boys are set to benefit, with the Australian Government providing $30,000 under the Government’s $19.4 million Success for Boys program, Federal Member for Hughes, Danna Vale, announced today.

Mrs Vale said the funding is proof that the Australian Government is committed to ensuring no Australian student falls behind in our education system.

“A number of recent reports have found that boys generally are not performing to their capacity on a range of measures, however the Government is tackling this problem head-on with the Success for Boys program,” Mrs Vale said.

“Success for Boys aims to support boys at risk of disengaging from school, improve their learning outcomes and ultimately help them realise their potential.”

Schools involved in the program will focus on the following areas:

• Effective literacy teaching; • The use of information and communication technology (ICT) as a means of improving boys’ engagement with active learning; • Giving boys opportunities to learn from positive male role models and mentors inside and outside the school; • Improving Indigenous boys’ engagement with school and educational achievement

The program builds on the success of the Boys’ Education Lighthouse Schools Program, which operated over 2003-05 and supported more than 550 schools nationally to develop effective teaching practices and strategies that work with boys.

Mrs Vale said the Success for Boys program is well placed to bring about significant and lasting change for Bonnet Bay Public School students and congratulated the school on its successful application for funding.

“Bonnet Bay Public School has shown great initiative in securing this grant and I’m confident this program will help these boys develop not just as students but as people,” Mrs Vale said.
