HUNT WORKING FOR POLICE VAN

Tuesday, 12 April 2005

The Hon Greg Hunt MP, Federal Member for Flinders, is working for a greater police presence in Somerville by taking the case up in Canberra seeking funding for a mobile police van for the local township.

Mr Hunt is working with the Rotary Club of Somerville-Tyabb to secure funding under the National Community Crime Prevention Programme (NCCP), for a mobile police van that will service the Somerville community and bring a police presence to the town.

Mr Hunt said, “I congratulate the Rotary Club of Somerville-Tyabb for producing the idea and taking the initiative in applying for funding. They are doing a wonderful job and I am delighted to have been able to support them by meeting with the office of the Minister for Justice and Customs, Senator the Hon Chris Ellison, and have argued the case for greater police presence in Somerville, urging the Minister to support the Rotary Club’s application for funding.

In fact, I have put the Rotary Club of Somerville-Tyabb’s application forward to the Minister as a perfect example of the intended purpose of the NCCP grants programme.

A mobile van will not only be seen but it will serve as an important part of the local community by providing a service that assists to increase security and to help out local residents in a broad range of matters.

As the work undertaken by Police is community-based much of the good they do is not widely acknowledged. They assist people to find the support they need, they may make sure an individual finds their way home safely and they perform many duties of good will for individuals without any form of public recognition.

Whilst the police currently do a tremendous job, the township of Somerville has grown rapidly over the last 10 years and as such, there is a desperate need for an increase in police presence in the area.

I strongly advocate a stronger police presence in the town. It is what the community has called for and I fully support them in their fight for this.
