$2.5 million to provide national coverage of World Youth Day

The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator the Hon Helen Coonan, today announced that SBS will receive $2.5 million in Australian Government funding to assist with comprehensive national coverage of World Youth Day.

World Youth Day is the largest youth event in the world and aims to gather young people from around the world and build bridges of friendship and hope between continents, peoples and cultures.

“The Australian Government recognises the significance of World Youth Day to many Australians,” Senator Coonan said.

“This additional funding will enable SBS to provide comprehensive coverage of the event and will allow all Australians to join in the celebrations.”

The SBS coverage will include:

• comprehensive live TV coverage of major World Youth Day events and services

• ‘Live Sites’ in capital cities across the country

• radio coverage including ‘in-language’ coverage

• significant online coverage and related activities

• the acquisition and commissioning of additional television content for broadcast before, during and immediately after World Youth Day, focusing on programming by, for and about youth.

“This funding complements the already substantial support the Australian Government is providing for this important national event. This includes funding of $20 million provided to the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney to assist them with the costs of hosting World Youth Day, and a commitment to bear other costs, such as visa facilitation and security,” Senator Coonan said.

The 2008 World Youth Day has been organised by the Catholic Church and will be held in Sydney from 15-20 July 2008.

The event will also mark the first visit of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to Australia.
