Unemployment Figures Show Strength of Economy

Friday, 11 August 2006

50,000 more jobs were created in July reducing the unemployment rate to 4.8%.

Liberal Senator for Victoria, Julian McGauran welcomed the latest figures saying they are an indication of the strength of the economy.

“Unemployment has not been this low since August 1976 and wage growth is also strong. These figures support the fact that the Australian Government is effectively managing the economy and providing jobs and wage growth for Australians,” Senator McGauran said.

“These figures completely rebut the outrageous claims made by the Labor Party and unions concerning the Australian Government’s workplace reforms.”

“Five months into the reforms it is already clear to see that the sky has not fallen in and thousands of people have not lost their jobs as the Labor Party and unions would have us all believe.”

“In stark contrast to their claims more people are working now than before the reforms were introduced,” Senator McGauran said.
