ANDERSON WELCOMES VIRGIN-SYDNEY AIRPORT DEAL

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Regional Services, John Anderson, today welcomed the announcement by Sydney Airport and Virgin Blue Airlines that Virgin Blue will move into the former Ansett Terminal (T2) from early December 2002.

"This is an excellent outcome which will greatly benefit the travelling public as well as the Airport and Virgin Blue. I am delighted that there are four airlines already operating from this first class facility including Qantaslink, Regional Express, Horizon and Aeropelican, and that they will be joined by Virgin Blue in December," Mr Anderson said.

"I am particularly pleased that regional passengers transferring onto Virgin Blue flights will now be able to enjoy smoother and more efficient connections by not having to travel all the way to the domestic express terminal.

"The arrangement arrived at with Virgin Blue and the other airlines guarantees common user access to 6 gates in T2 which will enable the airport to respond flexibly to growing demand in the future, including from a potential new entrant.

"While the Government played a constructive role in facilitating discussions between the parties over T2 this was always a commercial matter for them to resolve and I commend them for doing so," Mr Anderson said.
