Innovation, Industry, Science and Research: Minister

Senator Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, today announced Cavitus Pty Ltd had been awarded a $250,000 Commercial Ready Plus grant to develop its high-power ultrasonic device to clean and disinfect oak wine barrels.

Senator Carr said the Mawson Lakes-based company was one of 40 companies across Australia sharing in $23.6 million funding in the latest announcements of Commercial Ready and Commercialising Emerging Technologies (COMET) grants funding.

“Cavitus aims to achieve a superior standard of cleaning, by improving the removal of tartrate deposits from the surfaces and pores of wood,” Senator Carr said.

"The technology is also expected to extend the useful life of barrels and improve the transfer of oak flavour into the wine.

“After grapes, oak is the highest cost element in wine production and a successful outcome will have significant cost benefits to the wine industry,” he said.
