DR GEOFF GARRETT REAPPOINTED AS CSIRO CEO

22 April 2005

On behalf of the Australian Government and as Acting Minister for Education, Science and Training, I am pleased to announce the reappointment of Dr Geoff Garrett as the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation’s (CSIRO) Chief Executive until 31 December 2008.

Dr Garrett has provided strong leadership to the CSIRO since he was appointed as Chief Executive in January 2001.

The CSIRO, Australia’s premier research institution, has a long history of excellence and innovation which added enormously to our nation-building capacity. However, the challenges of today’s rapidly changing world have meant that the CSIRO has needed to change and evolve. Dr Garrett has helped transform the CSIRO to ensure that it continues its proud history of delivering real results for all

Australians.

The National Research Flagships programme, a new initiative that embodies the changes Dr Garrett has implemented within the CSIRO, has huge potential. The Flagships are pulling Australia’s best researchers together, across six priority areas, to work on the opportunities and challenges that will bring the greatest benefits to Australia.

This initiative will help to build new industries, broaden the skill base of the Australian workforce, encourage innovation, sharpen our international competitive edge and make the most of complex new technologies.

Science and innovation underpin our economic and social prosperity. Tackling the complex challenges of the 21st century must be underpinned by research excellence and increasing collaboration and cooperation.

The CSIRO is well placed to play its part in meeting those challenges to the benefit of all Australians.

The Government’s strong commitment and support for CSIRO under Dr Garrett’s steerage, has been underlined by the record $1.8 billion in funding provided for the 2004-05 to 2006-07 triennium.

I congratulate Dr Garrett on his reappointment and look forward to seeing the CSIRO go from strength to strength under his continuing stewardship.
