PORTLAND STANDS OUT IN JOBS FIGURES

Portland was the stand-out performer in the July employment figures just released.

The monthly labour market figures are based on the number of jobseekers getting the Newstart and Youth Allowance.

Of the five local regional centres surveyed, Hamilton, Ararat and Portland all recorded drops in the number of people receiving the allowances.

At the end of July, Portland had 11 fewer people receiving the allowances, there were four fewer in the Hamilton area and there were two less people looking for work around Ararat.

Mr Hawker said today Warrnambool and Stawell showed increases compared with the previous month.

He said that although the figures for each centre varied, the overall trend was extremely good, with around half the number of people in the south west receiving the allowances than was the case in 1996.

“I am confident that given the current economic conditions, small businesses should be able to continue taking on more employees,” Mr Hawker said.
