Cultural Relations Summit

I will host a Summit in Adelaide on Wednesday 25 February 1998 with leading figures in Australian arts and culture to explore ways of enhancing the national effort in this area.

The Summit will be an opportunity to develop ideas and possibilities for Australian international cultural effort with representatives from major fields of Australian cultural endeavour, Federal and State governments, relevant business organisations and representative industry bodies.

The Summit will take place at the time of the Performing Arts Market in Adelaide and on the eve of the Adelaide Arts Festival.

In its recent White Paper on Australia's Foreign and Trade Policy the Government outlined the importance it attaches to expanding cultural exchanges with other countries.

Through its cultural relations program the Government helps to project a sense of contemporary Australia and its cultural achievements. The Government has an initiating and coordinating role in the staging of cultural promotions. It also looks to a greater involvement by the private sector in such promotions.

This is a joint effort in which the government is keen to encourage contributions by State Governments, educational and cultural bodies, businesses and non-government organisations.
