MEDIA RELEASE

SHADOW MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT

LINDSAY TANNER MP

FEDERAL MEMBER FOR MELBOURNE

HOWARD LOSES THE PLOT

The Prime Minister has abandoned all pretence of policy rigour in his panic over the One Nation threat, Shadow Minister for Transport Lin dsay Tanner said today.

“John Howard has endorsed the $8.5 billion Melbourne-Darwin rail project without any serious consideration of its viability and without committing any Government assistance for the project.

“Transport Minister Mark Vaile was not even told about yesterday’s announcement. The New South Wales Government, which is central to the project proceeding was not consulted.

“The Northern Territory and South Australian Governments, which are committed to the Alice-Springs-Darwin rail project which is moving close to fruition, were not consulted.

“John Howard refused to offer any Government assistance to the project, even declining to commit to infrastructure bond assistance. His sole intention was to cloak himself in the appeal of a project which is still only at the conceptual stage.

“Mr Howard’s announcement has cast a pall of gloom over the Alice Springs-Darwin rail project and the Sydney-Canberra Very Fast Train project, which is also very well advanced. It also sits oddly with his Government’s failure to address Australia’s number one rail issue, the dilapidated state of the existing interstate track.

“What are the rail priorities of John Howard’s Government? Yesterday’s announcement shows that he is so frightened of One Nation that he has completely lost the plot”.
