FULL STEAM AHEAD FOR TELSTRA SALE

The Government today quashed once and for all reports that it is softening its stance on the sale of Telstra.

Peter Costello stated that the Government intends to have legislation in place for the full sale of Telstra from early next year.

This confirms that the Estens Report was a whitewash that cost taxpayers $350,000. The Government was always going to sell Telstra anyway.

Peter Costello is already talking about legislative timeframes before the Government has even responded to the report.

According to today’s budget update the sale of Telstra will proceed from 2004/05.

Labor says there is never a good time to sell Telstra. It doesn’t make sense financially and it doesn’t make sense socially.

Only a majority publicly owned Telstra will ensure that regional Australians receive decent telecommunications services into the future.

A fully privatised Telstra would leave town quicker than the banks.

The Howard Government has finally revealed it is determined to sell Telstra regardless of whether regional services are up to scratch.
