Subject : HUMPHRIES LAUNCHES GUIDE TO HELP STEP-FAMILIES

Author : Sen. Gary Humphries

ACT Liberal Senator Gary Humphries today launched Me and My Changing Family, a new booklet produced by the Child Support Agency to support step families.

Launching the booklet at Regatta Point, Senator Humphries said Me and My Changing Family will be a great resource for the estimated 8000 separated parents living in the ACT.

"This Sunday (30 July) is National Step Family Awareness Day, and I urge all step families in Canberra to order a free copy of the booklet," Senator Humphries said.

"Sadly 40 per cent of marriages in Australia break down and around 60 per cent of step families don't survive the pressures of re-partnering.

"I would like to congratulate the Child Support Agency on this valuable booklet which is full of practical advice and tips to help build healthy relationships in step-families," he said.

Comprehensively researched and customer-tested, Me and My Changing Family contains insight and tips from real life step-families on dealing with issues associated with re-partnering, including:

• having realistic expectation about what lies ahead; • understanding how the kids are dealing with it and what they are feeling; • making it work through planning, communication and compromise; • dealing with financial and legal aspects before they become an issue ; • dealing with becoming a step-

parent, even if you don't have kids of your own; • maintaining your relationship with your kids when your ex re-partners; • keeping it civil for the benefit of all involved - you, the ex, the new partner and most importantly the kids; • help for grandparents, such as how to stay in contact with your grandchildren or what to do if you become a step-grandparent; and • where to go for help, such as websites, hotlines, books, support groups and government agencies.

Me and My Changing Family, the latest instalment in CSA's popular Me and My series and can be ordered free of charge from the CSA website www.csa.gov.au or by calling toll free on 1800 040 972.
