CHANCE FOR YOUTH TO HELP ENVIRONMENT

The Nationals Federal Member for Mallee, John Forrest, today invited young people aged 17 to 20 to take part in an exciting new Green Corps project, The Northern Wimmera Biodiversity Support Project, located at Wail between Horsham and Dimboola in July.

Mr Forrest said the project, which will be based at Wail Nursery; primary activity will be to work with landholders in carrying out a broad range of field works. Activities will include seed collection, cleaning and storage, monitoring outcomes of previous works, nursery production and maintenance tasks. In addition the team will be involved with planting and guarding in conjunction with landowners, volunteers and contract teams.

“This project will incorporate a range of activities that will contribute to the understanding and appreciation of the land and instil a greater sense of community ownership of this unique area,” Mr Forrest said.

“This is a great opportunity for 10 young people in the Horsham and Dimboola areas to receive accredited training in Conservation and Land Management, a six-month participant allowance of up to $361 a week as well as an opportunity to make a lasting contribution to their local environment.

“The environment is the big winner: to date the achievements of Green Corps volunteers include propagating and planting over 11 million trees, erecting more than 4,700 kilometres of fencing, removal of over 36,000 hectares of weeds, collecting over 7,700 kilograms of seeds, and building or maintaining more than 4,000 kilometres of walking track.”

People interested in becoming involved in this project can obtain an application form by phoning the Green Corps hotline on 1800 077 700 or visit the Green Corps website at www.greencorps.com.au
