Hon Judi Moylan MP

Minister for the Status of Women

Wednesday, October 7,1998

The Minister for the Status of Women, Judi Moylan, today welcomed the increased number of female MPs into Fede ral Parliament.

“The Coalition took female representation in Federal Parliament to record levels in the 1996 election, taking the lead and setting the standard,” Mrs Moylan said.

“The efforts and success of our women has been outstanding.

“In particular, I pay tribute to my female Coalition colleagues who have brushed aside the suggestion that the 1996 result was somehow fortuitous,” she said.

“The great majority of these women have been re-elected and I look forward to their continued contribution to the parliament,” Mrs Moylan said.

On results so far, it is probable that over 30 women will take their place in the House of Representatives, bringing with them a diverse range of views and experiences.

For the first time, more than 20% of lower-house federal MPs will be women.

“The end result is likely to mean a stronger parliament with a very noticeable presence of women,” she said.
