Howard more Presidential than Bush - Brown

“Australian Prime Minister John Howard has arrogated more power than President Bush when it comes to war on Iraq, Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.

“The 296-133 vote in the US House of Representatives to give President Bush the right to invade Iraq and the expected similar Senate vote, after long debate in both chambers, means an invasion is imminent.

“In Australia, Mr Howard aims to send Australian defence personnel into this war with no parliamentary vote delegating him this power. He is assuming greater power than the American President. It is autocratic, not democratic. It is a reprehensible relegation of parliament, a view sadly shared by Labor.

“I will move again in the Senate next week for a Senate inquiry on invading Iraq Senator Brown said.
