FUNDING FOR VICTORIAN FLOOD DAMAGE PREVENTION

The Federal Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government, Senator the Hon Ian Macdonald, and Victorian Minister for Environment and Conservation, the Hon Sherryl Garbutt MP, today jointly announced funding for four projects in the 2001/02 round of the Regional Flood Mitigation Programme

The projects, to a combined value of almost $1.3 million, are:

Continued funding of the Hazel and Spring Creeks flood mitigation works; ● Continued funding of the Wangaratta Flood Mitigation Scheme; ● Continued funding of the Woodend Flood Mitigation Scheme; and ● Funding for a retarding basin to reduce the impacts of flooding for 350 properties in central Ballarat. ●

"It is estimated that flooding in Australia causes well over $400 million in damages annually. This is in addition to the profound social costs to affected communities," Senator Macdonald said.

"The ‘whole of community’ benefit gained from reducing the impact of flooding represents a most worthwhile Commonwealth investment."

"I am pleased with the level of cooperation between all levels of government towards promoting safety and protecting Victorian homes, infrastructure and businesses from flooding."

Ms Garbutt welcomed the additional funding saying that the value of flood protection measures in Victoria should not be underestimated.

"This initiative generates new money into much needed mitigation works through a partnership between Federal, State and Local Governments." Ms Garbutt said.

"I am pleased with the progress we have made in Victoria towards reducing the impact of flooding"
