NOVEMBER CAR SALE FIGURES SET UP STRONG FINISH 6 December 2000

6 December 2000            00/569

NOVEMBER CAR SALE FIGURES SET UP STRONG FINISH  Best-ever November sales figures of 71,796 motor vehicles were welcomed today by Industry, Science and Resources Minister, Senator Nick Minchin.

Senator Minchin said the result was the fourth time in five months that a monthly sales record had been broken since the new tax arrangements commenced in July 2000.

"When combined with the record sales figures achieved in July, August and October, this result shows the new tax arrangements for motor vehicles introduced by the Coalition Government are having a powerful impact in the market," Senator Minchin said.

"This is another great result for the motor vehicle industry.

"The motor vehicle industry has had four great years since 1997, including record sales and record exports.

"The challenge now is to build on this momentum to make it five great years in 2001.

"I am very proud of this industry and its achievements during the Coalition's time in office. The Commonwealth Government will continue to support this industry to see that it takes full advantage of its capabilities."
