Labor Names Calder Highway Completion Date Simon Crean - Shadow Treasurer

Media Statement - 1 November 2001

A Beazley Labor Government will commit to the Bracks Government's target date of 2006 for completion of the Calder Highway duplication to Bendigo.

Shadow Treasurer, Simon Crean, announced Labor's target completion date in Bendigo today with Member for Bendigo, Steve Gibbons.

"Federal Labor will advance the project on a stage-by-stage basis and will contribute 50% to the costs of the project, in a partnership with the Bracks Labor Government," Mr Crean said.

"The Howard Government promised the Calder Highway before the 1996 election, with a completion date of 2001.

"Five years on, Bendigo is the only major regional centre that isn't serviced by a dual carriageway to Melbourne.

"Full duplication of the Calder Highway is critical for economic opportunities and jobs growth in Central Victoria, as it brings primary producers and manufacturers closer to ports, warehouses and markets.

"It will not only make the economic and lifestyle opportunities of Melbourne closer, but also attract Melbourne people to the tourism features of Bendigo and Central Victoria.

"Calder will open up new opportunities for tourism, hospitality and accommodation, which means more jobs for the region.

"The growing wine industry and a host of historic tourist attractions in the region are already attracting large tourism numbers, and these efforts would receive a real boost from completing the Calder.

"Only Labor is committed to delivering the Calder Highway and only Labor is committed to delivering for Bendigo and Central Victoria," Mr Crean said.
