AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT SALVAGES HEALTH INQUIRY

Friday, 9 September 2005

Federal Member for Herbert, Peter Lindsay, has called on Townsville residents to provide evidence at a new Australian Government inquiry into allegations of negligence and inefficiencies at the Townsville Public Hospital. Peter Lindsay MP said the Australian Government provides more than half of the funding for the Townsville Hospital under the Commonwealth / State and Territory Health Agreement, and is fed up with the lack of quality health service delivery by the

Queensland Government. “Despite the tremendous efforts of a dedicated and professional staff, there have been serious ongoing problems at the Townsville Hospital, which the Beattie Government seems unable to address,” Mr Lindsay said. The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Health and Ageing, a Committee of the Australian Parliament, has agreed to visit Townsville and take evidence on the problems of the hospital. “This is the opportunity for Townsville

residents and health practitioners to give evidence on the problems they have seen and to suggest solutions,” Mr Lindsay said. “The evidence that may be taken will not be constrained by narrow terms of reference as governed by the Morris enquiry. This means any health matter may be raised with the committee. I welcome that. “Any evidence given will be under parliamentary privilege so witnesses will be able to tell their stories without fear or favour. This is not an enquiry just for doctors or managers, anyone can make a submission. I hope individual patients will come forward with their stories, and further information is available from my office.” The Committee is accepting submissions now and these should be sent directly to: Committee Secretary Standing Committee on Health and Ageing House of Representatives Parliament House CANBERRA ACT 2600 Tel: (02) 6277 4145 Fax: (02) 6277 4844 Email: haa.reps@aph.gov.au
