Kelly praises Queanbeyan Council motion on troops The Member for Eden-Monaro Mike Kelly has applauded a motion passed by Queanbeyan City Council welcoming home the Australian combat troops from Iraq.

Queanbeyan Councillor Tom Mavec last week moved a notice of motion noting that the Council congratulates Australia’s combat troops in Iraq for a ‘job well done’ and giving thanks for their safe return.

Cr Mavec said he was inspired to move the motion because our combat troops had served the country proudly under adverse conditions. “As a community, we need to honor them for their dedication to the task set for them,” Cr Mavec said

The Council unanimously carried the motion.

Cr Mavec looked forward to Council working in conjunction with Dr Kelly, as the Federal Member for Eden-Monaro and Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Support, and appropriate local organisations to “plan and host a suitable ceremony to mark this occasion.”

“I’m pleased to see this sort of reaction to the Government’s honoring its election promise to extract our combat troops from Iraq,” Dr Kelly said.

The Government had announced the extraction at the beginning of June and noted a special welcome home parade would be held in Brisbane on Wednesday, June 28.

“There should be lots of praise for these men and women of the Australian Defence Force returning to Australia,” Dr Kelly said. “This is our opportunity to thank these service personnel for their dedication, their courage and of course their personal sacrifice.”
