BUDGET 2001-2002 Media Release

John Anderson Deputy Prime Minister Minister for Transport and Regional Services Leader of the National Party

ROADS TO RECOVERY — FUNDING WESTERN AUSTRALIA’S LOCAL ROADS

2001 Budget 22 22nd May 2001

Tonight’s Federal Budget allocates a total of $45 million to Western Australian local councils from the Roads to Recovery programme for 2001-02.

The Roads to Recovery funding is in addition to $64.6 million WA councils will receive for local roads in 2001-02 from financial assistance grants identified for roads.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Regional Services, John Anderson, today welcomed the very positive response to the $1.2 billion Roads to Recovery programme.

The Roads to Recovery programme commenced in March this year and already more than $7.6 million has been provided to over 86 West Australian councils.

“Local councils across Western Australia have embraced Roads to Recovery and demonstrated that the Federal Government’s decision to give councils discretion to determine their own road funding priorities has been absolutely correct,” Mr Anderson said.

“Under Roads to Recovery the Federal Government has entered into a partnership with local government and has guaranteed each council four years of additional road funding.

“Valuable road works are under way across Western Australia through the many councils which have received their initial quarterly payments or have taken advantage of the Government’s offer to accelerate their grant money to enable

projects to be completed more quickly,” the Minister said.

“Roads to Recovery is helping build the social and economic infrastructure of local communities, enhancing road safety, access to education, health care and other amenities and creating sustainable jobs,” Mr Anderson said.

“The total allocation of funding for Western Australia over the four-year programme will be $180 million,” the Minister said.

In line with current arrangements for Financial Assistance Grants identified for roads in Western Australia, 7 per cent of the programme’s funding to the State will be held back from councils to distribute in connection with special needs.

Roads to Recovery is a Federal Government initiative for the repair, maintenance and upgrading of roads important to local communities.  It represents the largest funding injection by any Federal Government to local government road responsibilities.
