MINCHIN SAYS “NEVER EVER” TO DEATH DUTY… NOW WHERE HAVE WE HEARD THAT BEFORE?

Finance Minister Nick Minchin today emphatically refused to release an uncensored version of a 71-page policy document which was revealed this morning to contain a recommendation for an inheritance tax.

Senator Minchin refused to acknowledge that the document outlined Liberal plans to introduce a tax on inheritance which would apply to assets over $50,000, and stated that the Liberal Government would “never ever” introduce such a tax.

Now, where have we heard “never ever” before? Australians well recall John Howard making the same promise about the GST.

Senator Nick Sherry obtained the document under Freedom of Information provisions. But of its 71 pages, only three were left uncensored. Senator Sherry asked the Department of Finance at Estimates this morning to produce the entire document, but Senator Minchin stepped in.

If Senator Minchin has nothing to hide about the Liberal Government’s agenda, then he should release the whole document.

The Australian public can only assume that the Government is so desperate not to release the rest of the document only because it contains a secret agenda beyond even an inheritance tax.

We have already seen this Government impose or propose many sneaky taxes - an Ansett tax, a dairy tax, a medical indemnity tax, a tourism tax and a war tax. This is yet another new tax that Australians do not need.
