SENATOR KERRY O’BRIEN SHADOW MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT

QANTAS DOWNGRADES COMMITMENT TO SOUTH AUSTRALIA 16 June 2006

Federal Labor regrets the decision by Qantas to downgrade its South Australian air services and urges the airline to reconsider.

Today Qantas announced it would withdraw services to Kangaroo Island and Port Lincoln.

Residents and business owners in these communities will be affected by today's announcement.

It is regrettable that Qantas has decided these are not sustainable.

This decision by Qantas makes it essential that Regional Express (REX) maintain their South Australian services into Kangaroo Island and Port Lincoln.

Without a daily link to Adelaide, soon to be provided exclusively by REX, Kangaroo Island and Port Lincoln would lose business and the communities would be even more isolated.

Today's decision by Qantas will jolt South Australia and is a warning to other regional communities that Qantas/Qantaslink services can be removed at any time by Qantas.
