Commonwealth funding for Natural Disaster Risk Management Studies We are pleased to announce the first round of funding for studies approved under the Commonwealth’s Natural Disasters Risk Management Studies Program (NDRMSP) in Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania and South Australia.

The first round of Commonwealth funding totals $1.25M with the total value of projects exceeding $3.95M. The second round of funding, including approval for studies in Victoria, the Northern Territory and the ACT, is expected to be announced on 31 July.

The program has drawn a positive response from State and Territory Governments with more than 70 applications submitted to the Commonwealth for assessment. An overview of the successful studies is attached to this media release.

Every year, the cost of natural disasters to the Australian community is enormous. While State and Territory Governments are responsible for the delivery of natural disaster management, the Commonwealth alone has contributed more than $250 million in disaster relief payments over the past five years under its Natural Disaster Relief Arrangements.

However, in practice these payments assist State and Territory Governments after a disaster has occurred. In order to take a more pro-active and preventative approach to disaster management, the Commonwealth has implemented the Natural Disaster Risk Management Studies Program (NDRMSP) which allocates up to $3 million in Commonwealth funding each year.

Under the NDRMSP, the Commonwealth will fund up to a third of the cost of individual applications put forward by State and Territory Governments to undertake risk management studies which identify, evaluate and address the risks presented by natural disasters.

These project results will assist local communities and emergency management agencies to develop strategies to minimise the impact of natural disasters and to enhance the effectiveness of their response.
