Moree Bypass Tenders To Be Called Soon

Federal Member for Gwydir, John Anderson, today announced that tenders for the northern section of the Moree bypass project will be called by late September. Mr Anderson first approved the multi million dollar project in his previous capacity as the Australian Government Minister for Transport and Regional Services. “I can now confirm that the Australian Government has ticked off on the funding. There has been a significant blow-out in costs from $35m to $56.2m, but the need is so great that is will be fully funded,” Mr Anderson said. “I am pleased the way forward is now clear and I call on the New South Wales RTA to complete all the design work required for the urban section as soon as possible. I understand that for tendering purposes the project has been split into two stages to allow work to commence quickly. “Stage one is the roadworks south of the Mehi River plus the northern intersection with the Newell Highway. The second stage includes a new 156 metre bridge over the Mehi River and roadworks north of the river. While the route of the southern (urban) section is being revamped to follow the railway line more closely, tenders for the bridge and approaches can be called. “We all want to see the bulldozers on the ground and a quality road corridor taking highway traffic safely and efficiently through Moree. I am optimistic that the contract for the northern section can be awarded before Christmas, with construction to commence early in the New Year,” Mr Anderson said. Mr Anderson said the awarding of tenders for the bridge and approaches would be followed by the calling of tenders for the urban section in early 2007, allowing for construction to start by mid-year. “The entire project from Bullus Drive to the Newell Highway north of town is now expected to be completed and open to traffic in 2009”, he said. Overall, the bypass project includes the following: • 4.54 km of new two-lane highway standard road; • a new bridge over the Mehi River, 156 metres long; • an intersection with the existing railway level crossing at the Gwydir Highway. It will be controlled by traffic signals; • a

realignment of the highway on the northern side of Moree, to create an intersection that gives priority to bypass traffic; and • a ‘staggered T-intersection’ and slip lane on the southern side of Moree, joining with the existing Newell Highway, giving priority to bypass traffic. Mr Anderson said traffic speeds would be 80 kph from the northern highway junction to the Mehi River bridge and 60 kph from the bridge to the southern end of the bypass. “The proposed bypass is needed to remove as much of the existing heavy vehicle traffic out of the Moree town centre as possible. The large proportion of heavy traffic travelling along the existing Newell Highway through the town centre contributes to congestion, pedestrian conflict, noise and loss of amenity,” he said.
