Press Release Ref: 1540 Published: 30/6/2005 Title: Applications for Outside School Hours Care

Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, Gary Nairn has encouraged all existing and new child care services to apply for the latest round of Outside School Hours Care places recently announced by the Australian Government.

The 15,000 new places represent the first year’s allocation of the 84,300 additional OSHC child care places over the coming four years as part of the Government’s Welfare to Work package.

“This is the first allocation of places from the recent Budget, which provided for $266 million package of childcare measures. This package included a total of 84,300 extra outside school hours care places, 2,500 additional family day care places and 1,000 extra in-home care places,” Mr Nairn said.

“These childcare places will support parents with school age children and ease some of the pressure surrounding commitments to work and family.”

The Australian Government does not cap the number of long day care places and will fund any parent who has a child in any approved long day care service which meets state and territory government regulations and Australian Government approval.

The closing date for applications is 29 July 2005 and it is expected that the first 15,000 OSHC places will be allocated to services by early November 2005.

Anyone wanting to start a new OSHC service or expand an existing service should contact their state or territory office of the Australian Department of Family and Community Services on 1300 653 227.
