DEPUTY LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION IN THE SENATE

SHADOW MINISTER FOR TRADE

MEDIA RELEASE

24 July 1998

HOWARD SHOULD TELL WA LIBERALS:

YOU MUST PUT HANSON LAST

“John Howard should use his address to the WA Branch of the Libera l Party's annual conference this weekend to display some leadership and tell them they must put Hanson last’, Senator Peter Cook, Shadow Trade Minister and Deputy Senate Opposition’ Leader said today.

“Western Australia is more dependent on good trade relations with Asia than any other state in Australia.

"The relationship is now suffering and still the Prime Minister stubbornly refuses to lead his Party and to direct all Liberal branches to put One Nation last on their How to Vote Cards at the next election.

"The Western Australian Liberal Party is isolated from other Liberal Party divisions m accepting the wisdom of dumping Hanson.

“Now is the time for the Prime Minister to act. He can’t seek the support of the Western Australian Asian community while still refusing to act decisively on this issue.

“If John Howard does not make a stand he places Australia’s economic prosperity and the jobs created through WA's massive exports to Asia at risk’.
