Innovative new project to create strong sense of community

Minister for Family and Community Services, Senator Jocelyn Newman, today launched an innovative and exciting new project that aims to create a stronger sense of community in targeted areas of South Australia

Senator Newman said the Family Links project would operate in four areas identified by their social status and or geographic disadvantage, in a co-operative partnership between Commonwealth, State and Local Government.

The local areas launched today are:

Charles Sturt (Port Adelaide, Enfield, Hindmarsh and Woodville). ● Alexandrina (incorporating Victor Harbour, Port Elliott/Goolwa, Strathalbyn and Yankalilla). ●

Family Links workers will empower families, promote volunteering, encourage networks between families and community groups and promote the value of children's services to the community.

"Their key role will be to link families to existing children and family services and build the capacity of the community to find the right services and supports to enable greater economic and social participation," Senator Newman said.

She said children's services did more than just provide child care.

"They promote social capital which is about people and organisations working together in an atmosphere of trust and cooperation for the good of their communities.

Senator Newman said the project would also help families make connections in their communities thereby encouraging friendships and a feeling of belonging in the

neighbourhood.

"This in turn will encourage people to contribute to community life.

"I'm very excited about this project which reflects two of the Howard Governments main priorities: a strong commitment to ensuring that flexible, affordable and top quality child care services are available to all families who are juggling work and family responsibilities; and building strong communities.

"This project is consistent with our Stronger Families and Communities Strategy which aims to strengthen and enrich family and community life by encouraging governments, business, communities, families and individuals to work together in partnerships."
