Better after hours medical services for Sunshine Coast

November 7, 2002

The Federal Minister for Health and Ageing, Senator Kay Patterson, today officially opened the Sunshine Coast After Hours Medical Service.

"It is my great pleasure to open this service which has been established at the Sunshine Coast Private Hospital," Senator Patterson said. "It will continue to make a valued contribution to the health and wellbeing of the Sunshine Coast community."

"This service has also been embraced by the community with virtually every GP in Maroochydoore, Caloundra and Nambour participating in the program."

Commonwealth funding of $275,000 has been provided under the After Hours Primary Medical Care Grants Program.

Announced in the 2001 - 2002 Federal Budget as part of the After Hours Primary Medical Care Program, the Grants Program aims to improve the range of health care services and after hours service provision for both the providers and communities across Australia.

"This Grants Program is part of the Commonwealth's goal to improve the quality of after hours primary medical care around the nation and is part of our commitment to helping people to get affordable, quality after hours care," Senator Patterson said.

"Currently there are 69 grants being funded around Australia to enhance After Hours Medical Care of which this service is one and a further 15 organisations were recently successful in the third round of the grants.

The Government has provided funding of $43.4 million over four years under the After Hours Primary Medical Care Strategy.
