ANSETT TICKET TAX - CON CONTINUES

Airline passengers will continue to be hit with the Ansett ticket levy past the Howard Government’s 30 June date for its removal.

The Minister for Transport has confirmed that passengers who plan to travel after June 30 but purchase their tickets prior to that date will not be refunded the $10 tax.

This is nothing short of a mean and tricky tax grab by the Howard Government.

The Minister for Transport should front up to the travelling public and explain why airline tickets they buy now, regardless of when they travel, will be hit with the tax but if they leave it a fortnight won’t.

Not content to unnecessarily slug travellers for months beyond what was necessary to cover off its $330 million loan to cover basic workers’ entitlements, the Howard Government is continuing the con beyond its own removal date.

The belated decision to remove the Ansett ticket tax impost from the travelling public was well overdue, but this further tax bonanza is an appalling indictment of the Howard Government’s contempt for the travelling public and former Ansett workers.

The ticket tax has collected $240.2 million to March this year and is estimated to collect a further $40 million by 30 June and the Government has still not revealed how much it stands to collect from asset sales.

I call on the Minister for Transport to release all data relating to the Ansett ticket tax, including exactly how much money they will collect and how much they will receive from the Administrators.

I also call on the Minister to stop the rort and ensure all passengers who fly after 30 June are not hit by this indefensible tax grab.
