That's Right Senator Alston: The ALP Opposes Sell-Off Of NDC Arm Of Telstra Sue Mackay - Shadow Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government

Media Statement - 8 June 2001

In a surprising - yet welcome move, the Government yesterday used Telstra's Senate Estimates hearings to extensively promote Labor's "rock solid" commitment not to sell Telstra's construction and maintenance arm, Network Design and Construction (NDC).

"Whilst Labor is always pleased to hear the promotion of its policies by the Government, sadly for rural and regional Australians, the Minister for Communications, Technology and the Arts Richard Alston, also indicated that Telstra and the Government were still 100% signed up to the sale of this critical part of its service to regional and rural Australia in the next month.

"Despite across the board calls from all sides of politics, and rural and regional Australians, the Government continues to show it is badly out of touch on this 'privatisation by stealth' initiative," Senator Sue Mackay, Shadow Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government said today.

This contrasts starkly with Labor's opposition to the sell-off of NDC, or any part of Telstra, which was reiterated today by Senator Mackay.

"In the words of my colleague, Stephen Smith, Shadow Minister for Communications:

'Unlike the Howard-Anderson Government, Labor has never supported the privatisation of either Telstra or NDC...NDC is a valuable commercial entity that provides a fundamental telecommunications service for Telstra, the construction of telephone networks ...Unfortunately, the Howard-Anderson Government is ideologically obsessed with the full privatisation of Telstra and any part of the company.' [Stephen Smith, 13/3/01]

"And in the words of our Leader:

'I'm here to give our absolutely rock solid, rolled gold guarantee that no more of Telstra will be privatised. We believe that we need to keep Telstra in full public ownership to do the nation building task, particularly in regional Australia that is expected of it. It will not be done if it is

privatised.' [Kim Beazley, Cairns, 14/3/01]

"This is the ALP policy on the privatisation of NDC and Telstra, and it will not change," said Senator Mackay today. Authorised by Geoff Walsh, 19 National Circuit, Barton ACT 2600.
