Skills Expo in Melbourne

30 August 2006

Overseas students, backpackers and other temporary residents can explore options to work in Australia at the free Australia Needs Skills Expo in Melbourne on Friday September 1 and Saturday September 2.

The Australia Needs Skills Expos connect skilled workers with Australian employers and provide information about options to live and work in Australia.

"The Australian economy is booming and needs more skilled workers," Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs Amanda Vanstone said.

"I encourage overseas students, working holiday makers and other temporary residents - especially those who are skilled in a trade, engineering or health - to visit the Australia Needs Skills expo in Melbourne."

Experienced staff from the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA) and the Victorian Government's Skilled Migration Program will answer questions about work opportunities and visa options.

In 2005, the expo was attended by almost 5000 people who were able to discuss their options with Australian employers, Victorian regional exhibitors and DIMA.

The free expo is open to employers and skilled workers and also welcomes members of the public.

More Australia Needs Skills Expos will be held in Sydney (September 23), Perth (November 11) and Brisbane (April 13 and 14, 2007).
