Public hearing - Thursday 3 July 2003 - Sydney

The House of Representatives Ageing Committee is investigating issues on the ageing of the Australian population over the next 40 years.

The next public hearing for the inquiry will be held on Thursday 3 July 2003 at Parliament House, Sydney.

House Committee on Ageing Chair, Dr Andrew Southcott, said: “The committee will be discussing a range of important economic issues at this hearing.

“We will speak with Richard Gilbert, CEO of Investment & Financial Services Australia (IFSA) and Phillippa Smith, CEO of the Association of Superannuation Funds Australia (ASFA) on the need for all Australians to have appropriate funding strategies to better cope in later life.

“The Institute of Actuaries is also appearing, and will focus on factors which are important for long term planning of retirement income.

“Professor Kichu Nair, clinician, teacher, academic and researcher from John Hunter hospital and the University of Newcastle, will stress the importance of proper consideration of the underlying causes of illnesses of older people by medical staff, rather than simply treating the symptoms of diseas e.

“Dr David LeCouteur from the Centre for Ageing Research will outline ways of promoting research into ageing, a much neglected field of investigation.”
