Some of the most important heritage buildings and historical places in North West Victoria could benefit from funding under a new Australian Government program.

John Forrest, The Nationals Federal Member for Mallee, invited local groups to apply for Round One of the Australian Government’s new four-year, $10.5 million program to help conserve some of the nation’s most important historic buildings.

“Applications seeking assistance to help restore historic heritage buildings can now be applied for through the National Heritage Investment Initiative,” Mr Forrest said.

“This means projects as diverse as restoring a roof or repairing historic masonry are eligible for support.

“The Federal Government recognises the importance of protecting our important heritage places around the country, that’s why it has announced this new initiative.

“I welcome this significant and practical commitment that could help our local area and I encourage anyone in North West Victoria to consider applying for support,” Mr Forrest said.

Mr Forrest said activities that would be eligible for support include:

• preparing conservation management plans • works to protect or stabilise places or to reverse the causes of deterioration • works to repair, reinstate or restore historic places

Applications were eligible from a wide range of organisations and individuals including:

• private owners, or those who hold a Crown lease • legally incorporated not-for-profit bodies • Universities and schools

• local government

• state or territory (including Norfolk Island) government departments, agencies or authorities

The National Heritage Investment Initiative is a competitive grants process that was announced in the 2005- 06 Budget.

Mr Forrest said while the initiative gives priority to places included on the National Heritage List, support is also available for historic heritage buildings included on state and territory government statutory heritage lists.

Applications for National Heritage Investment Initiative close on 20 January 2006.
