Deputy Labor Leader

Shadow Minister for Employment & Industrial Relations Shadow Minister for Social Inclusion

WOMEN & WORK CHOICES:

HOWARD GOVERNMENT OUT OF TOUCH

The Howard Government has proven just how out of touch it is on the impact of its extreme Work Choices laws on low income, hard working Australian women.

The Howard Government has arrogantly dismissed report after study after report that shows Work Choices is having a detrimental effect on low income workers and women in particular.

Joe Hockey has claimed that Work Choices is “good news all around for women” but the hard evidence is clearly mounting against him and his extreme laws. (Media Release 17 May 2007)

The latest report to be attacked and dismissed by both the Minister for Employment & Workplace Relations and the Minister for Women’s Issues, is a report originally commissioned by Pru Goward as Sex Discrimination Commissioner.

The Women and Work Choices: Impacts on the Low Pay Sector study, conducted by twelve leading academics, provides the first comprehensive, qualitative study of the effects of recent industrial relations reforms on low paid women workers.

The Minister has attacked the academics and their work as “biased” and “sham” simply to avoid responding to their substantial and substantive research findings.

At the same time the Minister continues to refuse to release data on his Australian Workplace Agreements, leaving qualitative studies as the only option for academics and researchers.

Joe Hockey and Julie Bishop have refused to listen to low paid working women who are suffering under their extreme and unfair workplace laws.
