TAKING THEATRE TO NEW PLACES AND FACES

Friday, September 29, 2000

Senator John Tierney today congratulated the local 2 Til 5 Youth Theatre on its grant from the Australia Council, the Federal Government's arts funding and advisory body.

Senator Tierney said the grant of $30,000 would assist the Youth Theatre in the development of its work with young people aged 8-25 through their programs of drama groups and performance projects.

"I'm thrilled that the creative vitality of the local community has been recognised in this way, especially since there was a very competitive field of applicants from all over Australia," he said.

"These grant decisions are made by artists and community peers who have relevant experience and are decided at arm length from Government. They are given only to the most promising and established artists and it is an indication of the 2 Til 5 Youth Theatre's anchievments that they are supported.

"The Australia Council's Theatre Fund has given 48 grants, including 14 triennial grants worth nearly $4 million. The grants will support a range of vibrant and innovative theatre activities in regional and rural Australia, the capital cities and for overseas touring.

"The fund supports a broad range of theatre - text-based work, puppetry, youth, physical and circus work."

Senator Tierney addedd that the community would benefit from such projects, which took new and innovative work to diverse sites and networks. This will allow increased access to contemporary performance ensuring that all Australians have the opportunity to participate in and enjoy the arts.
