Further Support For Foster Carers

Thousands of foster carers around Australia will be e ligible for a Health Care Card for foster children in their care from today, Minister for Family and Community Services, Senator Jocelyn Newman said.

“Foster carers who receive Family Allowance will now have access to benefits under the Health Care Card provided that the foster child was eligible for a concession card when they lived with their original family,” Senator Newman said.

“The Government recognises the valuable contribution carers make not only to the children they care for but also to the community at large.”

“The Health Care Card will provide foster carers, including those outside formal state and welfare organisations, with a greater level of medical assistance for foster children in their care.”

“Fostering is a way of providing an experience of family life for children who for various reasons, cannot live with their own parents for a short or long period of time. The Government is committed to supporting foster carers and encourages people to undertake foster care.”

More than 4400 foster families are expected to benefit from this Budget initiative, enabling them access to cheaper pharmaceuticals for foster children in their care.
