Drought funds for Johnstone Shire M E D I A

R E L E A S E

National Party Senate Leader, Ron Boswell, today welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement that two projects in drought affected communities in the Johnstone Shire will receive $33,560 in funding for environmental work.

The Government is providing $6.7 million in funding nationally to communities in drought-affected areas through a special drought recovery round of the Envirofund, which is part of the $2.7 billion Natural Heritage Trust.

Senator Boswell said the drought recovery round is also an element of the $900 million package of measures introduced by the Government to help drought-affected Australian communities.

“This special round of funding involves grants of up to $30,000 for community groups to protect and rehabilitate the local environment affected by the drought,” he said.

Projects funded in the Johnstone Shire include:

• $22,650 to rehabilitate the Lockyer Creek, South Johnstone • $10,910 to improve water use efficiency on pastures and fruit crops, Innisfail

“This funding round recognises that community-driven projects are the best way to effectively manage the effect the current drought is having on our environment,” Senator Boswell said. “Using the expertise and local knowledge of community groups on the ground will deliver the best results for the environment.”

Further funding is now available from the Envirofund with the next round closing 5pm, Friday 4 July 2003. Application forms are available by calling 1800 065 823 or visiting www.nht.gov.au.
