FUNDING FOR CLARENCE TOWN BUSINESS PLAN

Tuesday, October 10, 2000

A Federal Government grant of $10,010 has been approved for Dungog Shire Council to undertake business planning for a Rural Transaction Centre in Clarence Town, Senator John Tierney said today.

This funding will provide assistance for the preparation of a business plan for Clarence Town and surrounding district. The aim will be to identify the services required by the community and assess the feasibility of establishing a Rural Transaction Centre.

The Federal Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government, Senator the Hon. Ian Macdonald, has approved the funding under the Rural Transaction Centres (RTC) Programme.

“The RTC Programme is an important aspect of the Government’s commitment to restore basic transaction services to small communities,” Senator Tierney said.

“Clarence Town now has the opportunity to identify what services are needed for the local area.”

Prior to the establishment of an RTC, funds are made available for local communities to prepare a strong business case for the ongoing operation of a centre. Over 260 towns are now benefiting from RTC funding.

Under the RTC Programme, funds are made available to help small communities establish their own centres providing access to basic transaction services such as banking, postal services, Medicare Easyclaim facilities, phone and fax.

“Not only is this programme restoring services but a number of small communities have been assisted to establish services they have never had,” Senator Tierney said.

“This includes banking services, Medicare Easyclaim and some have provided a separate room for visiting professionals like doctors and accountants.”

Local communities interested in applying for assistance can contact the RTC Secretariat to discuss their proposal and the application process.

The secretariat can be contacted toll free on 1800 038 160. Further information is available from the Programme’s website www.dotrs.gov.au/rtc and the Email inquiry service: rtc@dotrs.gov.au
