BADGERYS: THE FINAL ASSAULT

“The Government has released the final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Sydney's proposed se cond airport at Badgerys Creek", said Roger Price MP, Federal Member for Chifley. "This is it: the final EIS. There are no more changes to be made."

"The final EIS has provided no significant information that is not already known. In fact it confirms many of the claims made about noise and health issues." Mr Price said.

"The Government delayed the Environmental Audit Report's release because it is still critical of the EIS process : "it remains the Auditor's view that the impacts reported in the EIS documents are generally understated…” (p 26 Auditors Report)

"Another serious flaw in the EIS process is that there has been no definition of the role of the second airport; a fact not lost on the Auditor.” “ The Auditors principal Cancerns for the EIS relate to the…lack of a clear definition of the project." (p75 ibid) " Mums and Dads in Western Sydney will be amazed that an EIS can give a qualified go ahead for an Airport whose role the EIS is unable to define" , Mr Price said.

"Just as the draft EIS process was flawed and lacking in public confidence, this final EIS has failed to repair the damage".

"I will remain opposed to the construction of the Airport and I believe that the majority of Western Sydney residents will not change their total opposition to the construction of the airport either. The residents of Western Sydney will be dismayed at the single-minded determination of the Howard Government to dump an Airport in their midst," Mr Price said.

‘There are currently 1,718,572 people in the Greater Western Sydney region and by the year 2017 Western Sydney will have more than half of Sydney's total population (2,541,336). There are more people living in Western Sydney today than in either Perth or Adelaide. Make no mistake, this is the equivalent of plonking an airport in the middle of downtown Perth."

“The taboo subject in the public debate is the capacity of Kingsford Smith Airport (KSA) and do we really need another Airport?"

The EIS simply dismisses any need for such research." Mr Price said. "The Auditor's report is critical of the decision not to examine the environmental impact of NOT building Badgery's".

“The EIS is unable to estimate what effects weather conditions will have on the operation of the airport: "The possible influence of these conditions on airport operations are unknown at this stage and further work is required." (p 27 of the summary document) - How can an EIS be in any way credible when it has done no research on environmental effects?"

Following are some points highlighted by the EIS:

“Exceedances of goals sat by the National Environment Protection Council for nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter are predicted..." (p27 ibid)

"Aircraft overflight noise generated by the operation of the Second Sydney Airport would cause disturbance to sleep, and interference with communication and performance of tasks." (p33 ibid)

The report estimates 178,000 people will suffer noise events greater than 60dBA more than twice a night. (p16 ibid)

" The estimated net direct residential property devaluation [will be] $67million” (p24 ibid)

"The sites of the airport options are considered to be of State significance for flora and fauna… (p36 ibid)
