A REMINDER TO SIMON CREAN NOT TO BREAK ANOTHER LABOR PROMISE

This is just a remi nder to Simon Crean to keep the promise that he has made for today.

This morning on Neil Mitchell’s program on 3AW Mr Crean said that he did not know about the significant consequence of Labor’s capital gains tax, especially as it impacts on older Australians.

Mr Crean has promised a clarification by today.

I would like to remind Mr Crean that he has only about seven hours to make sure that he does not miss the deadlines for tomorrow’s papers.

Following is an extract of what Mr Crean said on the Neil Mitchell programme:

MITCHELL:

Will they lose their tax credits if they sell their assets?

CREAN:

Who? The people who have got these assets? What, under the capital gains tax? I’m not sure on that point.

REITH:

You’re not sure?

CREAN:

I’m not sure on that.

REITH:

How convenient. The man says he’s not sure. You’ve got a massive tax on these people and when you’re asked a blunt question, you sit here and say you are not sure. There are tens of thousands of older Australians who are going to be hit by an increase in their income tax and then face a marginal rate of nearly 60 cents in the dollar. It’s there in the paper this morning, Simon. You would have rung your head office and would have asked them this morning, “What is the answer to that?” And what have they said? “Oh, just say, ‘Oh, we’re not sure’.” I require you, Simon, today to give us a full answer which confirms that statement this morning by an independent expert that older Australians will suffer very disproportionately as a result of the capital gains tax on their income tax. Will you today give us an answer to this simple question?

CREAN:

Yes, I will give an answer to that.

REITH:

Thank you. In writing?

CREAN:

Today.
